The Academy for Sport Leadership (TASL) was launched in August of 2001 by a group of women representing business, education and athletics. Despite their diverse backgrounds and professions, all of the founders shared a common concern and a common vision.

In launching this new nonprofit organization, their goal was to reverse a dramatic, 30-year decline in the number of women coaches.

They envisioned TASL as a pathway program: a venue for training and mentoring young female athletes, a resource for networking and job placement, and a center of research and advocacy for women committed to sport leadership.

A Comprehensive Approach

Since December of 2001, when it was officially incorporated, TASL has developed an array of innovative programs and initiatives, all part of an integrated approach to sport leadership training. Current activities include:

Future Coaches Camp
A week of intense training, coach-mentoring and leadership education for high school-age girls. » More info

Women's Sport Summit
A statewide conference highlighting women's athletic accomplishments. » More info

Athletic Administration Internships
Hands-on training in athletic administration for college women, offered in collaboration with Greenhills School in Ann Arbor, Michigan. » More info

Mentor Training Workshops
A one-day educational event for adult coach-mentors, with a focus on professional development of future coaches. » More info

Clinics for Coaches of Youth Sports
Half-day workshops designed for anyone interested in coaching youth sports. » More info

The TASL Coaching Manual
Currently in production, a detailed reference guide and source of inspiration for women coaches.

Since 2001, TASL has promoted women in coaching and sport leadership through a dynamic combination of action learning programs, internships, mentoring, conferences, and advocacy.
